“I used to listen to a Sunday night hip-hop radio show – JMack’s Jammin’ Underground – on headphones while in the joint. The show made me aware of the hugely talented and unheralded Suga Free, but they also threw in some Eminem tracks. When I got out of the joint, suddenly every essayist in America was lauding Eminem’s talent and cultural significance. And my reaction was always, ‘We’re talking about the same guy who did that ‘Real Slim Shady’ song, right?’”
